The Health Benefits of Meditation are Linked to Mental Silence

According to a recent study carried out by the University of Sydney, there are significant links between mental silence meditation as practiced in Sahaja Yoga and improved health and wellbeing.

The experience of 'mental silence' is linked with better health outcomes and greater wellbeing .

Not surprisingly the study discovered that the best outcomes were with people who were suffering from mental health conditions.

Most markedly there was a robust relationship between the frequency of experiencing mental silence and better mental health.

For the purpose of this study, meditation was deemed to be a meditation practice that  achieved "mental silence" rather than any other form of meditation such as relaxation or mindfulness. The participants had practiced meditation for at least 2 years. More than half of them where able to experience mental silence several times each day

Dr Ramesh Manocha who led the research said

"Our analysis showed very little relationship at all between how often the person who meditated physically sat down to meditate and mental health scores. However the relationship was clearly apparent in relation to how often they experienced the state of mental silence.

"The health advantage appears to be connected to this aspect more than any other feature of the meditation lifestyle. In other words it is quality over quantity.

"While we did expect that there would be some differences between the meditators and the general population we didn't expect the findings to be so pronounced. We repeated large components of the survey several times to confirm our results and got the same outcomes."

This is one of the first studies to assess the health benefits of meditation and the results are very encouraging, suggesting that meditation can have a positive impact on health and wellbeing and in particular on mental health.

A technique that is used to achieve mental silence is a yoga meditation practice called Sahaja meditation. The idea is that the practitioner is able to achieve a higher state of consciousness. In this state conscious thought is replaced with mental silence. This is far more than simply being silent. It means that the mind is no longer thinking. This type of silence can only be achieved with regular daily practice.
